Cleaning our makeup brushes- a task we’ve all neglected at some point or another… But a very important task nonetheless! If you’re not cleaning your makeup brushes on a regular basis, they will become a breeding ground for bacteria and when you rub old makeup onto your face it can lead to breakouts. Taking proper care of them will also lengthen the life of your brushes! Keep reading to find out how you can make your own brush cleaner at home. It’s natural, safe, and effective. And the best part? Essential Oils!
what you'll need...
100ml Aluminum Bottle - Safe, sturdy, easy to travel with
Fractionated Coconut Oil - nourishing, will help get the stubborn gunk out of brushes
Castile Soap - Non-toxic, biodegradable, cleans gently and effectively
Tea Tree Essential Oil - Antiseptic, antibacterial, fights acne + skin imperfections
Lemon Essential Oil - Cleansing, detoxifying, purifier, fresh citrus scent
Silicone Brush Cleaning Pad or Small Bowl - To help with the cleansing process
how to...
- Combine 2 tbsp Castile Soap, ½ tbsp Fractionated Coconut Oil, 8 drops Tea Tree and 10 drops Lemon into 100ml Spray Bottle.
- Fill up the remainder with water
- Shake before every use
- Wet your silicone brush cleaning pad and spray mixture onto the pad. If you don’t have a cleaning pad, a small bowl or mason jar will do just fine. Gently swirl your makeup brushes around until you can no longer see any makeup coming out of the brush
- Run the bristles of your brush under warm water to make sure there is no residue left over, squeeze excess water out and lay them flat or on a slight angle to dry
*Make sure to point the bristles down when running under water. Direct water contact may loosen the glue where the bristles are attached and shorten the life of your brushes*
If you tend to use your makeup brushes on a daily basis, consider washing them at least once a week! This tends to be a “chore” a lot of us like to skip, but it’s not doing your beautiful skin any favours. Try to incorporate makeup brush cleaning into a “Self-Care Sunday Bedtime” routine. Put on some of your favourite tunes to wind down to, apply a face mask and clean your brushes while you wait for it to work its magic. Lay your brushes to dry before bed, and they’ll be ready to use in the morning!
