beach waves in a bottle: diy sea salt hair spray

Are you looking for an all-natural way to keep your hair looking beachy all summer long? Avoiding the use of chemicals is the name of the game these days. It seems like the world is becoming a little more conscious of both, what we put in and on our body as well as the impact we are having on the environment. There are so many simple ways to eliminate toxins from our environment.

If you have ever travelled to or live near the ocean, you know how amazing that ocean water makes your hair look and feel. We have created a tried, tested and true recipe to bring those beachy waves to your hair without costing a small fortune. Every day can be beach day!

recipe

1-2 tsp sea salt (substitute epsom salt if you find sea salt too drying)

1 tbsp fractionated coconut oil or argan oil*

1 cup warm water

5-10 drops each peppermint and rosemary essential oils

directions

Step 1: Make sure you have a 240 ml (8 oz) glass spray bottle or 250 ml aluminum spray bottle.

Step 2: Warm 1 cup of water. Warm water will assist to dissolve the salt and help mix the ingredients. The water should be warm to touch but not boiling.

Step 3: Pour the water into a measuring cup. This is the easiest way to mix all the ingredients and easily pour it into your bottle of choice.

Step 4: Add the desired amount of salt and oil of choice. Remember to start with smaller amounts and add as desired. Adding more salt will give you more texture to your hair.

Step 5: Add the essential oils. Again, start with smaller amounts and add until you reach the desired scent. Peppermint and rosemary essential oils are known for maintaining healthy scalp and hair from root to tip. Feel free to use other essential oils (or none at all) should you desire a different scent.

Step 6: Stir the ingredients until the salt has completely dissolved. The salt will act as an emulsifier helping to keep both the carrier oil and the essential oils suspended in the water.

Step 7: Pour your creation into your bottle of choice. Give it a good shake and spray damp hair! If you are spraying after freshly washing your hair, be sure to towel dry hair well prior to adding. Once your hair dries, try not to touch it. The more you touch it the more the texture from the spray will disappear.

argan oil

*Because argan oil has smaller molecules than most other carrier oils, it is able to penetrate the hair cuticles more easily, in turn, repairing damage and keeping hair healthier.

Note: This recipe is more of a starting point. Everyone's hair is different and therefore may require alterations to this recipe. Start with smaller amounts of the sea salt and carrier oil and adjust. People who tend to have dry hair may want less sea salt (or use epsom salt)  and a little more oil. People who tend to have oilier hair may want the opposite.

Easy, breezy and beachy!
